I was reading yesterday an interview with Rachel Yoder (author of Nightbitch, a book I must read). In the interview, she said that no matter what, a writer needs to write even a few lines every day. I am not a writer or a novelist; I do occasionally blog (although I should blog more). And, I should write more.
Now, I have a scrapbook. In it, I write book lists of books I find from online sources, that I would at least like to check out. I write lists of TV shows and movies I would like to watch; keep articles and short stories or whatever else I find in print and online that peaks my interest. Quotes from books that I would like to remember, and I comment upon.
Oh, and my scrapbook has stickers. Every page I write has a sticker. (This is a new development but I find it adds colour and flavour to the pages) The first page is always about: books I bought (mostly on Kindle, as there are very good daily deals for 99p), or I have started using Humble Bundle as I have found that it has interesting book deals. What I play as computer games (which usually is one game: Star Wars The Old Republic), what I am reading (currently it is Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens), and what I am watching (just finished The Orville, and boy, am I glad there will be a third season, and have started watching Star Wars Visions). Maybe a thought or two. And the first page always starts with the date and a Star Wars sticker. (Yes I am a huge Star Wars fan. And yes I also love Star Trek and most sci-fi franchises, etc. out there.)
However, lately, due to various circumstances and a bit (or a lot of) laziness, I have not written anything of my own. And I am asking myself: why? I have days where there are so many ideas, thoughts or comments about various things. There are days when I get fleeting ideas which should be written down. Some may be interesting, some may be stupid… but I should write them down and see what I can make of them. Maybe they will not pan out; maybe they will be a very stupid idea deserving of a Darwin Award; still I should write it down. And as I want to post in this blog, there definitely will be an idea for this blog.
In fact I started writing this down, and I thought “Why not make it a blog post?”, and here it is. Rachel Yoder is right. And not just for me, but everyone needs to write a little bit every day. Maybe just what they are feeling and why; maybe a story that happened at work or on the street, or anywhere; anything really. Some people may not be used to writing; that is okay. maybe write once per week; something that happened; an idea for improving the house; anything really.
All I can say is have something to write with; even if it is just a mobile phone or tablet; there is also the audio feature, where a recording of an idea can be made. My preference is pen and paper, but different people can find different ways to jot down what their writings or their art.
