I am woke. You can say that I am a bit of a Social Justice Warrior. But I will always use my brain to evaluate a situation.
Let us take the example of statues. There was a lot of turmoil about the statues in connection with the Black Lives Matter movement.
Should those statues that portray racists and slavers be taken down and not displayed in parks for example? Absolutely yes. Should they be destroyed? No. They are part of history, and we need to remember history. Destroying, forgetting history is not the answer. Learning from history, learning from the mistakes of the past is.
We are not going to eradicate racism by destroying statues. We are not going to eradicate racism by destroying history. We are not going to eradicate racism by forgetting history. Eradicating racism, as well as sexism, homophobia, transphobia, is going to happen through education. Governments need to spend money on education, not just children but adults as well.
That is why those statues need to be preserved in museums with proper descriptions. Describing why they were initially made, who these people were, and why those statues were taken down. This is an opportunity for educating people.
Is this post past its time? No, I do not think so. If we look around us, there will be more statues that should be taken down. Put them in a museum, educate people about the past and what is wrong. Education is the key.
I am all for eradicating any form of discrimination, however it may be called. I want to call myself an ally of the Black Lives Matter movement, and I support educating people on the subject of racism, and how our prejudices influence our decisions. Mine too. Although I do not consider myself racist in general, I too am guilty of stereotyping people of colour, or being racist in a way I did not comprehend.
If I have ever been racist, it was not done on purpose. I am truly sorry for it. And if I ever say something that can be considered racist, I would like people to point it out so I can correct myself. We all need to work together to end racism in all its forms. We need to educate ourselves first.
